How to Care for Houseplants by Season
Most houseplants need 30–50% less water in winter. Growth slows dramatically, light levels drop, and cooler temperatures mean soil stays moist for much longer. Check the soil before every watering — if it's still moist 2cm deep, wait. Overwatering in winter is the leading cause of root rot.
Fertilise actively growing plants from spring through early autumn (roughly March–September in the Northern Hemisphere). Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during this period. Stop fertilising completely in autumn and winter — plants are dormant or slow-growing and can't use the nutrients, leading to fertiliser burn.
Spring is the most important season for houseplant care: repot root-bound plants into fresh soil, resume feeding after winter, increase watering as growth picks up, propagate cuttings for new plants, clean dusty leaves, and move plants to brighter spots as days lengthen.
Yes, seasonal repositioning makes a big difference. In winter, move plants closer to windows to compensate for lower light. In summer, move sun-sensitive plants away from south-facing windows to prevent leaf scorch. Rotate plants a quarter turn each month for even growth.
Tropical plants (Monstera, Calathea, Peace Lily) are most sensitive to seasonal changes in light and temperature. Succulents and cacti need a true winter rest period with reduced watering to encourage spring flowering. Hardy foliage plants like ZZ Plant and Snake Plant are the most consistent year-round.
