Room-by-Room Plant Advice

Which Plants Work Best Where?

The best bedroom plants are those that tolerate lower light and ideally purify the air or release oxygen at night. Top picks include Snake Plant (releases oxygen at night), Peace Lily (absorbs VOCs), Pothos (thrives in low light), and Lavender (calming scent). Avoid heavily scented flowers in the bedroom as they can disrupt sleep.

Bathrooms have higher humidity and often lower light — perfect for tropical plants. Ferns, Calathea, Peace Lily, Pothos, and Tillandsia air plants love bathroom conditions. Avoid succulents and cacti in bathrooms as the humidity can cause root rot.

The best office plants are low-maintenance, air-purifying, and don't require constant attention. Spider Plant, Pothos, ZZ Plant, Snake Plant, and Peace Lily all work well on desks or shelves. Studies suggest having plants visible while working reduces stress and can improve focus by up to 15%.

Pet-safe houseplants include Spider Plant, Calathea, Haworthia, Boston Fern, Ponytail Palm, Air Plants (Tillandsia), and most Orchids. Toxic plants to keep away from pets include Pothos, Monstera, Philodendron, Peace Lily, Aloe Vera, Snake Plant, and ZZ Plant. Always verify with the ASPCA's toxic plant database.

The most tolerant low-light houseplants are ZZ Plant, Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata), Cast Iron Plant, Pothos, Chinese Evergreen, Peace Lily, and Dracaena. No plant survives in complete darkness — all need some light source, even artificial, to photosynthesize.
